The Battle of the Beards

I have not shaved my beard since we arrived in May. When I went to England for a semester while in college, I didn’t shave during the entire four month trip. When I arrived back home, I was able to walk right up to my mom before she recognized me. I doubt that will happen now - my bald head gives me away.

Because my Spanish class was canceled today, the house is clean and I have nothing else to do before I go to pick up my children, I am soliciting opinions on which is the better beard. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to vote.

Here’s a picture of me then (bottom photo) and two minutes ago (top photo) after about the same amount of time of unclipped growth. Notice the cool glasses in the then picture.

OK Paul you can guess my vote cut the beard altogether a little scruffy look is cool but you look like a character right out of the bible,a tunic and a staff and you could play a sheperd in the christmas pageant.I do remember hardly recognizing you on your return from europe, gone are the days.I will recognize you on your return from Ecqudor right or should I just look for the bearded guy with a real cute little boy stuck to his hip? Love you every way mom

Okay, the 2008 beard is a better beard: fuller because you're an older guy and therefore probably growing more hair everywhere but your head. But the 2008 picture looks like a mug shot and you look like you could be dangerous. And what's that around your neck? The string to your hat or a man chain?

The 1991 picture, for some reason, I like much better. There's something...warm and familiar about it. But I can't understand why you cropped out the cute hippie boy you were snuggling up with who made you get that coy little smile on your face.

Sorry, I had to delete my original comment because there was a misspelling and I couldn't figure out how to just fix it after I posted it.

WOW they are both funny but I kinda agree with Zoey. I say trim it down a bit. Thin it out. Don't you get food caught in there.

Who were you hugging in the 2nd pic? Your face looks the same in both shots.

Paul, you still look like Che or Trotsky. I sent an earlier post underLife is a Shit sandwich.

See you soon.

The 2008 beard is clearly the winner. I say grow it out until you look like the guys from ZZ Top!

#1 is a cleaner look. The second one is great though. you got that sly look on your face.

People, we are judging the quality of the beard, not the positives or negatives of the photo. Sorry the current pic looks like a mug shot. I was concentrating on taking the picture. not concentrating on looking good in it.

In answer to someone's question, my friend Neil was to my right in the 1991 photo. I believe we may have been in Amsterdam and he may have been holding something that I wanted. I cropped him out to protect the innocent.

Shave it and then consider the bag a 'head accessory'. You could start a new trend. Oooooh, is that an authentic Ecuadorian headbag???

Correction from Neil's wife: The 1991 beard picture is at a youth hostel in Brussels. We had spent a night or two there at the end of travels together and this was a goodbye picture.

In response to Christine's inquiry about food getting caught in the beard, I'm not sure about that but I do know that when Neil has a substantial beard it definitely holds odors. I can tell, for instance, if he had a meatball sub for lunch. He doesn't get to keep a big beard for very long.

I didn't think of the odor thing. That is funny yet kinda gross at the same time. I would imagine it would be the same for Paul, although I am not about to sniff his beard. I will just trust you.

I like the 91 beard too, but that's not to say the present one isn't pretty cool. Yes I recognized that little bit of me in the 91 photo. I think everyone should grow a beard, big beards, really bushy beards. Beard Up!
